From a small amateur project to the largest digital archive dedicated to Bulgarian cinema, BGMovies has come a long way.
This page tells the story of the website through the years — with all its changes, pauses, redesigns, and comebacks.
2006 — The Beginning
BGMovies was launched in 2006 as bgmovies.info — a small website created with a great love for Bulgarian cinema.
Back then, the internet looked very different:
- tables
- bright colors
- heavy menus
- small images
- and lots of enthusiasm
The site began as a database of Bulgarian films and gradually expanded to include:
- actors
- directors
- photographs
- comments
- ratings
- user profiles
2007–2010 — Growth
BGMovies began transforming into a true community.
New features included:
- user registrations
- favorite movies
- comments
- statistics
- most-viewed personalities
- movie rankings
Over time, the site became one of the few places online where people could find information about Bulgarian films.
2011–2016 — The Red Curtain Era
This is the period many visitors remember most fondly.
The red theater curtains, film reel, and spotlight became iconic elements of BGMovies.
By this time, the site contained:

- filmographies
- trailers
- articles
BGMovies was no longer just a database. It had become a digital archive of Bulgarian cinema.
2016–2026 — The Dark Years
Sometimes even archives fall silent.
Gradually, the site was left without active maintenance.
Yet BGMovies survived.
2026 — The Return of the Spotlight
After years of silence, the spotlight shines once again.
The website has been completely rebuilt with a new design, a darker and more cinematic style, improved organization, and a new vision:
not simply a database, but a living memory of Bulgarian cinema.
The new version preserves the spirit of the original BGMovies while presenting it in a modern way.
