Jivotyt e prekrasen, nali?
2001 · Documentary
Life is Lovely, Isn't It? tells the story of a young man who has survived a terrible childhood who, despite the psychological traumas he has endured, puts huge efforts, and not entirely without success, into finding his rightful place in society. He is 22-year old Alexander Ivanchev, one of his mother Julia's seven children, who up to the age of 14 has never gone to school, because he had to take care of his three younger siblings. Educated in an orphanage, he finds his fulfillment in the profession of hairdresser and begins to practice it even in the home for abandoned children. Alexander's life is presented on the screen in retrospect, against the background of his preparations for and participation in the annual international hairdressing contest held in Sofia.
The film is neither tearfully sentimental nor arrogantly ironic; it presents an exceptional fate as a totally normal life event and provokes solidarity and participation with people who, due to the coincidence of circumstances have been deprived of the most elementary prerequisites for success in life, but who have lost neither their dignity nor the courage to struggle with their own personal realization.
