Na malkiq ostrov

1923 - a group of anti-fascists are imprisoned on a small island in the Black Sea. Old salt Costa Rica contrives an escape and shares his plan with carpenter Zheko, the Student and the Doctor. While preparing for the escape, the Student unintentionally provokes Costa Rica's death. The romantic youth decides to swim to the coast so as to organize the release of his comrades but dies. Zheko tries to escape with the firing practice rafts but gets shot. The Doctor organizes a mass escape from the prison but in the last moment he breaks his leg. To avoid being a burden to his comrades he blows himself up. A bitter parable about the slow maturing of the idea of freedom – both collective and personal. The characters' deaths are absurd, with no pathos.
