Leon Niemczyk

Leon Niemczyk was born on Dec. 15, 1923, in Warsaw. He fought in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, an ill-fated attempt to overthrow Nazi rule. After World War II, he served briefly in the United States Army in occupied Germany before returning to Communist-ruled Poland. After a later attempt to flee was thwarted, he was sent to prison.
He remained a critic of the Communists, a stance that he believed cost him leading roles for four decades.
Leon Niemczyk was married six times but had no children.
He died in Lodz, Poland, on November 29th, 2006.
